Practical Information
Everything you need to know before you go
Best Time to Visit
June through September. Warm summer temps mean open trails and easy driving, with long daylight for photography. Arrive early for Glacier’s popular spots.
Recommended Vehicle
Campervan is perfect with plentiful campgrounds along the route. Avoid very large RVs due to narrow byways. Compact rentals recommended for easier parking and access.
Charging & Gas Stations
Gas stations are accessible in all major towns (McCall, Missoula, Kalispell). Top off before driving Highway 12 and remote sections.
Cell Coverage
Good in larger towns (Boise, Missoula, Kalispell), but expect spotty coverage in Payette National Forest and Glacier National Park. Download maps for offline use.
Estimated Cost
Estimated $150–$200 per day including mid-range campsite fees, groceries, fuel, and one or two local experiences. Budget slightly higher inside Glacier NP.
Parking Information
Campsites have dedicated parking; towns have free or inexpensive municipal parking. Arrive early at Glacier trailheads for spots.
Accommodation
Reserve campgrounds in advance, especially near Glacier and Flathead Lake. Many state and national forest campgrounds support campervans and are pet-friendly.
Road Conditions
Generally paved and well-maintained. HWY 12 and the approach to Glacier can have winding, narrow stretches. Summer is smooth, though occasional construction and wildlife crossings are possible.
